A Matter Of Choice
An old friend came to pay me a visit at my cafe. Had been quite a while since we last met and we chatted till closure. Decided to have our dinner at one of the eating outlets nearby. But then there is a problem. My friend belongs to sort of a Taoism clan and is a staunch vegetarian who wouldn't touch anything that contains meat. According to him or to his clan's beliefs, animals are reincarnation of human beings whose souls are trapped within the bodies of different animals and thus when we eat meat we are in that sense eating human flesh. That disgusting thought come to mind whenever he sees meat, thus putting him off any meaty meal. In fact, we would have committed a grave sin of cannibalism and would be condemned to hell. Though I don't subscribe to that line of reasoning, I do try to be accommodating and be a vegetarian when we do dine together. However, as it was already past 9 pm, the vegetarian outlets nearby were already closed. He was upset and wouldn't give up looking for one that is still open. Though I was famished, I agreed to accompany him on his search for a vegetarian meal. After a 45-minute search, we finally found one near Victoria Hotel. It was quite a tasty meal but it set me wondering if it was worth going through all that trouble just to fill our tummy? What if we didn't manage to find a vegetarian stall? Is he going to settle for bread or some other non-meat stuffs? Well, to him maybe it's worth the trouble to stand by what he believes in but will those around him be willing to make similar sacrifice? Then it occurred to me that he doesn't have that many friends especially female friends and I remembered during one of our casual chats, he did mention that his future wife must not only share the same faith as him but must also be a vegetarian like him. No wonder he is still single at 35 years old. I guess he has drastically reduced his chances of a match when he set those requirements but then who knows he might just meet someone that meets his criteria. It's a matter of choice that he wants to lead such a life so as to be at peace with himself and I do sincerely hope that he would find his match soon as I'm definitely not a willing vegetarian. I would rather have my meat and go to hell. Do you know of any vegetarian who fits the bill?
